Bala Shanmugam

Bala Shanmugam is a techn leader and practitioner who has spent over 25 years at the intersection of financial services, enterprise infrastructure, and large-scale engineering transformation. His most formative years were spent at ANZ Bank, where across more than a decade he rose from Lead Business Analyst to Head of Technology for Payments Platforms — a role in which he led a 350-person engineering organisation, oversaw a $50 million annual transformation investment, and built the systems that reliably move $160 billion in payments daily. That combination of technical authority and institutional scale is what separates Bala from the field: he has not merely advised on enterprise transformation — he has built and owned it.

Following his tenure at ANZ, Bala brought that institutional rigour to Atlassian, where he led engineering for the Developer Platform, before channelling his expertise into entrepreneurship. As founder of P8.io and Cubewire, he is now building the next generation of financial infrastructure — cloud-native payment systems for banks, fintechs, and governments at P8.io, and enterprise-grade Web3 infrastructure through Cubewire’s Layer 2 blockchain and digital asset wallet platform.
